Some of you may have noticed that a lot of men have one painted fingernail and you probably think that this is just a new trend; however, the truth has nothing to do with fashion. This trend began in Australia and it has spread in the USA as well. Elliot Costello was the one who began the movement after meeting Thea, a little girl, on his travels around the world with the aim to help underprivileged areas with Hagar International.

When he was in Cambodia, he became friends with the little girl who loved painting her nails while talking about her day to day struggles. This is how Elliot found out that this little girl was sexually abused. Elliot then told her that he would always keep one nail painted as a memory of what she went through.

Inspired to make a change after meeting Thea, Elliot came up with the Polished Man Project, that is, men are being encouraged to paint one fingernail and wear it for 7 days as a symbol for the 1 in 5 children being victims of sexual assaults. The purpose of the movement is to challenge violent behavior and language on a local and global level, according to the Movement’s website.

Men should be the voice for change since 96% of sexual violence on children is done by men. Another important purpose of the Movement is to encourage conversation and new ideas about potential donations for support programs for children who have been victims of sexual abuse.

As support, more and more men are painting their fingernails and sharing the photos on social media. So, if you’re a man and if you’re reading this, paint one fingernail and participate in spreading the awareness of the sexual violence against children!
